The photo and video sharing site Photobucket Inc., Palo Alto, Calif., announced the broad release of its application programming interface that will allow Web developers to build new applications based on Photobucket’s digital media sharing technology, reports the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal.

The API and supporting materials let developers give users access to their photos and videos from places beyond Photobucket.com, including other websites, Web applications, desktop applications, browser plug-ins, mobile phones, home-entertainment systems, digital photo frames, and cameras.

In related news Ontela Inc., Seattle, Wash., a company that provides technology infrastructure to wireless carriers, announces support for the Photobucket API with its PhotoCopter service. Ontela’s PhotoCopter provides Photobucket’s users in the United States an automatic way to save photos taken with camera phones to their Photobucket accounts. With PhotoCopter, users snap a picture and the service automatically saves the image to their favorite destinations. Since the Photobucket API works on any device with an Internet connection, environments might include other websites, Web applications, desktop applications, browser plug-ins, mobile phones, home-entertainment systems, digital photo frames, and digital cameras.

In addition, another new tool has been created for Photobucket. Albumprinter B.V., Amsterdam, the Netherlands, announced the launch of Albelli, the Albumprinter photo book creation tool. The Albelli software was developed with Adobe Flex 3, the open source Flex framework for developing rich Internet applications (RIAs), and deploying on Adobe AIR enables Albelli to be delivered on the desktop across operating systems.
The Albelli application allows uploads images while users work, has auto recovery, smart page layout, rich text and image editing and preview. The integration with Photobucket allows its users to drag and drop their high-resolution images from both their Photobucket account and desktop computer to create their own personalized photo book. After choosing from the backgrounds, effects and text options that Albelli offers, the user completes the order and receives a printed, bound photo book in about 7 days, says the company.
